Happy New Year! This blog is about being happy. I know it sounds trite, possibly cliché, and far to light-hearted for times such as these. But those among you who made New Year`s resolutions did so because you wanted to feel happier. You might have decided to commit yourself earnestly to a fitness program, or a new hobby, or perhaps to learning a new skill. Whatever it is, you determined that success in reaching your goal would make you happy – or at least feel better. Whether we resolve anything at New Year`s or not, what underlies every endeavor in our lives is the impulse toward pleasure. And away from pain.
Yes I hear your objections, I really do. I have canvassed all of them, myself, in a very personal way, and have come back from my inner travels to tell you all about it. Stay tuned for many more blogs on this. I`m writing this blog because I want you to have the benefit of what I have learned.
To explore the idea and experience of happiness (why we should be happy, why we should consciously aspire to be happy, why we don’t do it, why it`s hard to do it, why it`s the kindest thing you can do for the world, and most importantly, how to do it) I will need to explain a bit about me, and the book I wrote.
The book`s easier so I`ll start there. It`s called “Dancing with Differences” and I just launched it in the Fall of last year. It`s not directly about happiness, actually, but happiness is the result of using the ideas I talk about in the book. Strangely, it was not written with happiness foremost in mind, either. As I look back on writing it I have to laugh- no matter what I do it always circles back to this – it`s always about happiness.
Dancing with Differences is about how to let everything and everyone be just as they are, and how to, instead of fighting against all the things that drive you nuts, use your thought and attention on purpose by directing them toward what you prefer....and away from what you do not. This is the formula for every ill that plagues you, like conflict with other people, difficult situations, etc. Incidentally, it is also the formula for the uncovering of your happiness.
It really is simple. It`s just totally different from what you have been accustomed to doing up till now.
So in this blog, I`ll share what life has taught me – through my own stories, the book, and new stuff that comes up along the way.
But more important than the idea of happiness....I want you to experience it, as often as you wish. I want you to have full control over how much happiness you give yourself, every moment of every day. I want you to give yourself permission to have it. I want you to understand how powerful an agent of positive change it is, how strong an influence it is on others. I want you to know for yourself the feeling of being happy independent of conditions around you. Yes – independent of conditions around you. My whole life long I wanted so badly to find the keys to living this way. My search has borne much fruit and has blessed me with a wonderful life – and, as with all things, it is never finished, but continues to grow....
Welcome.
Yours in appreciation,
Janet
